Submissions
Submission Preparation Checklist
All submissions must meet the following requirements.
- This submission has not been previously published in English or Japanese, nor is it before another journal for consideration (otherwise, please include an explanation in "Comments to the Editor").
- The submission file is in DOC or DOCX format (template). If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, please ensure our ability for anonymous peer review by not referencing the author's name, affiliation, or publication anywhere in the submission, including the file property information.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and length requirements outlined for the respective section.
- Submissions should adhere to the Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition if in English or the JSS citation format of the Japan Sociological Society if in Japanese, adding a ludography (see our styleguide).
- All references have been checked for accuracy and completeness.
- All tables and figures have been numbered and labeled.
- Images (JPEG, PNG etc.) and tables (XLS, XLSX) are not embedded directly in the paper but are uploaded separately under the Supplementary Files option. Please indicate with captions where an image or table should go.
- Permission has been obtained to publish all photos, datasets, and other material provided with this submission.
- If their submission is accepted, authors agree to prepare a Better CSL JSON export (alternatively, a Zotero, RIS, or BibTex export) of all their references, including the ludography.
Theoretical Article
A paper building new theoretical knowledge concerning analog role-playing games, such as TRPGs or larp, in relation to existing theories. Expected length: ca. 6,000 words (English) or 12-15,000 characters (Japanese). Peer-reviewed.
Case Report
A hands-on report based on original ideas or new perspectives, discussing implantation, results and/or best practice examples. Expected length: ca. 4,500 words (English) or 8-12,000 characters (Japanese). Peer-reviewed.
Original Research Article
A paper on new findings based on one or several connected, original studies. Expected length: ca. 6,000 words (English) or 12-15,000 characters (Japanese). Peer-reviewed.
Educational & Practical Material
Materials or tools useful for educational or teaching through analog RPGs in Japan and worldwide. Expected length: ca. 4,500 words (English) or 8-12,000 characters (Japanese). Peer-reviewed.
Explorative Paper
An experimental contribution that, for example, links research on role-playing games to an ergodic/interactive engagement with its readers. Expected length: ca. 4,500 words (English) or 8-12,000 characters (Japanese). Peer-reviewed.
Book Review
Creative and critical discussion of publications concerning analog RPGs. Expected length: ca. 1,500 words (English) or 2-3,000 characters (Japanese). Editor consultation.
Short Note
An article written for the purpose of disseminating and sharing creative ideas that contribute to the research and practice of analog RPGs, or discussing ongoing research and practical projects. Expected length: ca. 3,000 words (English) or 4-6,000 characters (Japanese). Editor review.
Essay
A non-academic article written from a unique perspective on trends and future development of analog RPG in Japan and worldwide. Expected length: ca. 3,000 words (English) or 4-6,000 characters (Japanese). Editor review.
